Warmest Greetings,
Wishing everyone a wonderful start to fall and
this magical time where the Earth is decorated
in a pallet of colors and delicious scents
wafting in the wind. I hope that you and
your family have created many wonderful memories
over the summer time!
As the Earth begins to settle into a quieter
time and its temperature begins to drop, my
nursing wardrobe changes. Summer is so
easily accessible to nurse with less layers.
As the colder days approach I found that using
many light layers made it easier to feed in
public. My favorite nursing accessory is a
simple scarf. Scarves are a compliment to
anyone's wardrobe, but for me, I really selected
them to make nursing easier in public. My
children always did not care for a big, heavy,
nursing cover, and I couldn't bear to carry
another "prop." A scarf is a great way
that they were not over heated and had enough to
cover and be courteous to those around me.
Please bring
your wardrobe tips for nursing in public to our
next meeting to share!
Many BLLLessings,
Erin Abrams

Good for Moms, Too
From New Beginnings, Vol. 26 No. 2, 2009, p. 46
Research in the journal Obstetrics and Gynaecology in April this year (appears in the May issue) reveals that women who breastfeed their babies for more than a year lower their own risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke.
Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh found that women who breastfeed for more than a year are 10% less likely to develop heart conditions than those who do not. Breastfeeding was also found to reduce the risk of high blood pressure by 12% and diabetes and high cholesterol by around 20%. The study authors found that women who breastfed for one or more months were less likely to have high blood pressure, diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease, but it wasn't until after six months of total breastfeeding time that the trend toward lower heart disease risk became statistically significant.
The study focused on nearly 140,000 post-menopausal women. On average, it had been 35 years since the women had last breastfed, which suggests that the beneficial impact lasts for decades.
Researcher Dr. Eleanor Bimla Schwarz, an assistant professor of medicine, epidemiology, obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences, said: "Breastfeeding is an important part of the way women's bodies recover from pregnancy. There are certain hormonal and physiological changes the body expects to go through after pregnancy and when those changes don't happen, that leaves certain body systems in a precarious way. The longer a mother nurses her baby, the better for both of them."

Would you like to see our LLL group reach
out to more mothers and bring more awareness
to breastfeeding? If you have ever
thought of volunteering or giving back a
small amount of your time while making an
amazing shift in our area's thinking, I can
not express how rewarding being a Leader is.
For me, it has given me the opportunity to
connected with so many amazing mothers and
families that they have made me a better
mother and wife. I am truly blessed to
be in this community and help support it. If

What is our purpose as LLL Leaders?
Leaders know the importance of one mother
helping another to recognize and understand
the needs of her child and to find the best
means of fulfilling those needs. Leaders
provide information and support so that each
mother can make the decisions which are best
for her family.
What does a Leader do? Most Leaders fulfill
the basic responsibilities of leadership,
which are:
• Helping mothers one-to-one by telephone,
email, or in person.
• Planning and leading monthly Series
Meetings.
• Supervising the management of the LLL
Group.
• Keeping up-to-date on breastfeeding
information.
• Upholding the LLL philosophy
|
LLL Philosophy
|
-
Mothering through breastfeeding
is the most natural and
effective way of understanding
and satisfying the needs of the
baby.
-
Mother and baby need to be
together early and often to
establish a satisfying
relationship and an adequate
milk supply.
-
In the early years, the baby has
an intense need to be with his
mother which is as basic as his
need for food.
-
Breast milk is the superior
infant food.
-
For the healthy, full-term baby,
breast milk is the only food
necessary until baby shows signs
of needing solids, about the
middle of the first year after
birth.
-
Ideally, the breastfeeding
relationship will continue until
the baby outgrows the need.
-
Alert and active participation
by the mother in childbirth is a
help in getting breastfeeding
off to a good start.
-
Breastfeeding is enhanced and
the nursing couple sustained by
the loving support, help, and
companionship of the baby’s
father. A father’s unique
relationship with his baby is an
important element in the child’s
development from early infancy.
-
Good nutrition means eating a
well-balanced and varied diet of
foods in as close to their
natural state as possible.
-
From infancy on, children need
loving guidance which reflects
acceptance of their capabilities
and sensitivity to their
feelings.
